What is Invisalign?

Invisalign is a teeth-alignment system that uses a series of clear plastic aligners to slowly move your teeth into optimal alignment. It’s a great alternative to traditional metal braces and addresses many of the same alignment problems without a mouth full of metal.

Invisalign treats the following alignment problems:

  • Overbite
  • Underbite
  • Crossbite
  • Open bite
  • Crowded teeth
  • Gapped teeth
  • General misalignment

Invisalign is an incredibly versatile system that improves most smiles. In the event your alignment issues are better addressed with metal braces, Dr. Miller refers you to a great orthodontist.

What are the benefits of Invisalign versus metal braces?

There are a number of reasons why so many people prefer Invisalign to traditional metal braces. One primary factor is the aesthetic appeal of Invisalign. Your aligners are clear and virtually invisible once in place. That means no gleaming smile when you make a presentation at work, or in social settings.

There’s also a considerable comfort factor involved. Metal braces can cause discomfort in the soft tissue of your mouth, especially if anything places pressure on your mouth. Teenagers who are active in sports prefer Invisalign because of the reduced risk of cuts and scrapes.

The wires, brackets, and hooks used in metal braces can cause discomfort even without any mouth trauma. If a wire becomes dislodged or a bracket pops off, you’ll need to schedule an appointment to have the damage repaired.

Invisalign also makes it much easier to maintain proper dental hygiene. There are no brackets or wires to trap food, and brushing and flossing are much easier when all you have to do is remove your aligners for a few moments.

How does Invisalign work?

The process begins with advanced scanning technology that maps out the position of your teeth. The Invisalign software uses that data to create your customized treatment plan. You can even see what your smile will look like once your treatment is complete.

A dental lab manufactures your first few sets of aligners, which are clear plastic trays that fit snugly over the surface of your teeth. The trays place gentle pressure on your teeth in much the same way as metal braces, slowly moving them into better alignment.

You’ll wear your aligners around the clock, removing them only to eat and perform your dental hygiene routines. Every few weeks, you’ll switch to a new set of aligners as you move closer to your treatment goals. Periodic visits with Dr. Miller ensure you make good progress.
