Maintain a Healthy Smile with Preventive Dentistry
In-office Preventive Care
Dr. Miller provides preventive care as a part of every routine visit. However, if you experience tooth pain or soreness, or you notice that your gums are swollen or bleeding in between visits, you should schedule an appointment right away so that we can evaluate your symptoms. One product we may recommend is fluoride to help strengthen your teeth and make them more resistant to plaque buildup. For treatments, we can provide fluoride varnish and biteable trays, which apply fluoride in just a few minutes during your regular appointment. We will also evaluate your gums to diagnose periodontal disease and formulate a treatment plan, if necessary. In order to obtain a more detailed view of your teeth, jaw, and other oral structures, we will take digital images of your smile once per year using either our digital panoramic X-ray machine or 3D cone beam scanner. By examining these images, we can detect hidden signs of decay, tooth infection, and other concerns.
As an additional preventative measure, we can also use the the DIAGNOdent® system to diagnose decay before it has a chance to cause serious damage to your teeth. The DIAGNOdent® system uses a specialized type of laser that allows our dentist to detect cavities and bacteria on or within your teeth that may be unseen to the naked eye. As a part of your biannual dental examination, we will also perform an oral cancer screening by looking for any abnormal growths, called lesions, along your gums, cheeks, and other oral tissues. This potentially deadly disease is highly treatable when caught at its earliest stages. If Dr. Miller spots any unusual signs, he may recommend a biopsy for a professional diagnosis. At the Miller Center, we’re concerned with your overall health, not just your smile.
Maintaining a Healthy Smile at Home
To help you maintain healthy teeth and gums while you are away from our office, we will demonstrate proper brushing and flossing techniques during your in-office exam. You should brush your teeth with a toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste after every meal, or at least twice daily, and use floss to clean between teeth once per day. Certain hard-to-reach regions in the back of your mouth and in-between teeth are highly susceptible to bacteria buildup, so it is essential that you pay special attention to these areas. If you are unable to brush following a meal, we recommend rinsing your mouth with water or chewing sugarless gum to prevent decay.
