Teeth Whitening Candidates
The best teeth whitening candidates should:
- Be at least sixteen years old
- Not be pregnant or breastfeeding
- Be free from certain medical conditions such as diabetes
- Not be allergic to peroxide, the most commonly used bleaching agent in chairside and take-home whitening formulas
- Be free from periodontal (gum) disease, as whitening could irritate the gums or exacerbate this condition
- Have no current cavities or exposed roots due to disease or decay
If you are experiencing any oral health issues, we will need to provide general and restorative dentistry treatments before moving ahead with any cosmetic enhancements, such as whitening. A foundation of healthy teeth and gums is essential to having a beautiful smile.
We use Philips Zoom!® WhiteSpeed in our office to lighten your teeth up to eight shades during a single appointment. During this process, we will place a protective material around your gums to prevent any irritation or discomfort. Next, we insert a retractor, a device that comfortably and gently holds your mouth open and protects your skin and gums. Then, we will apply the hydrogen peroxide gel formula to your teeth and use the WhiteSpeed blue LED lamp to intensify the effects. After fifteen minutes, we will take out the gauze, protective material, and retractor and will rinse your mouth before administering two or three additional fifteen-minute interval whitening treatments, depending on your needs and preferences.
Most patients notice immediate results after the procedure. For even more dramatic results, we can provide customized whitening trays, crafted from an impression of your smile, so that you can apply Zoom!® DayWhite and NightWhite at home. These formulas come in varying intensities and include amorphous calcium phosphate, a compound that strengthens your enamel while you brighten your smile.
Opalescence® Go: The Convenient At-home Option
If you want a more affordable whitening system, we offer Opalescence® Go, one of the leading professional take-home whitening kits. Opalescence® Go includes disposable trays and a hydrogen or carbamide peroxide gel formula that comes in varying strengths (ten or fifteen percent) and flavors (mint, peach, or melon). At home, you will simply spread the gel within the tray and bite into it, at which point it will vacuum seal around your teeth. You will wear the tray for between five and thirty minutes each day for a period of five to ten days to lighten your teeth. We will be available to answer any questions you have and put you at ease throughout this process.
