When you smile, laugh, frown, or look puzzled, you contract the muscles of your face. Over time, these contractions produce permanent furrows and deep wrinkles in the skin, especially around the mouth. These lines can make you look older, sad, angry or tired. Dermal fillers can not only prevent you from deepening these lines during natural facial movements, they can also erase these marks of aging, leaving you looking younger and refreshed.
Dermal fillers are FDA-approved and safe for use by most patients. Many of the fillers are made from substances found naturally in the body, or synthetically made to mimic natural substances or stimulate collagen production. These fillers are injected directly into the skin of the targeted area to restore volume and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. At The Miller Center For Esthetic Excellence, we offer patients several different dermal filler options in order to provide the best possible results for their individual needs.
BOTOX Cosmetic is a highly purified protein injected into the skin to relax the muscles that cause some kinds of wrinkles. While BOTOX can treat certain medical conditions, such as excessive sweating, it is most commonly used for cosmetic purposes, primarily to reduce wrinkles in the area of the mouth. BOTOX injections are relatively painless, as the needle used is significantly smaller than those used for other injectable fillers.
The best candidates for BOTOX are men and women seeking an enhanced appearance with fewer wrinkles. In addition, it is important that those seeking treatment are in good physical health, are not pregnant or nursing, and do not have a neuromuscular disorder. People seeking BOTOX injections should have realistic expectations regarding this procedure’s abilities and should discuss their desired goals with their doctor beforehand.
BOTOX injections are administered by a qualified physician using a very fine needle. The procedure only takes a few minutes and requires no anesthetic. Day-to-day activities can be resumed immediately afterwards. Wrinkles begin to fade within 24 hours, with continued improvement over the next 5 days.
Side effects of BOTOX Cosmetic are rare and are usually mild and temporary. The most common side effects are headaches and temporary redness or bruising of the skin at the site of injection. Any risk of complication can be reduced by choosing a qualified and experienced physician or dentist.
Dermal fillers i.e. Restylane® and Juvéderm® are biodegradable materials used by dermatologists or dentists in injections targeted at smoothing out wrinkled skin. Dermal fillers are primarily composed of hyaluronic acid, a natural substance occurring within the body. In addition, not only does the injected volume of dermal filler add fullness to skin, but it also attracts water molecules to the site of injection, further enhancing its effectiveness.
While inside the body dermal fillers provide longer lasting results that are apparent almost immediately after injection, although it may take a day or two before natural body processes and swelling subside. A follow-up appointment will be scheduled for a later date (4-8 months) for another set of injections to further prolong the effect.
There are very few complications associated with dermal fillers. The compound itself is derived from bacterial origins, so most allergies should not be an issue (unless specific to bacterial proteins). The side effects are minimal and will not interrupt daily routine. These may include:
- Slight redness
- Minor swelling
- Mild discomfort
These will all subside within three days or less as your body adjusts to the new hyaluronic acid. Consequently, the suggested recovery period for dermal filler treatment is just under three days. It is advised to refrain from rubbing or massaging the treated area for approximately 48 hours.
